30 “Old” Movies to See Around Orlando in 2019

This past Sunday, Greg and I ventured out to the Enzian theater in Maitland with my friend Debora for their showing of Jack Black’s School of Rock.  There is something special about getting to see older movies in a theater again that I thought I would share some of my favorite programs around town.

The Enzian’s Peanut Butter Matinee Films

I LOVE this program.  It is an adorable concept.  About once a month, the Enzian hosts a family friendly film on Sunday at noon.  Kids 12 and under get in FREE and adult tickets are only $9.  Each kid gets a raffle ticket as they enter and the host will raffle off some fun prizes, including a DVD of the movie you came to see.  They have a special peanut butter and jelly sandwich menu where kids can customize their sandwich (the sandwich comes with a side and a drink for only $4.50 total!).  The usual full menu is available for adults so you can have your grown up food and drinks, too.

Greg and I saw Shrek here last year and were excited to go again for the School of Rock showing (that girl Summer was basically me in elementary school).  I would definitely recommend getting their early to get a good seat.  Doors open 30 minutes prior to the show.  The parking lot is also relatively small, so that is another reason to get their early.  This is a great deal for families on a budget- or if you have to entertain/babysit a bunch of your child’s friends for the afternoon.

Here is the list of the films they have coming up in the series so far for 2019:

February 24: Batteries Not Included
April 28: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
May 26:Time Bandits
June 30: Mrs. Doubtfire

We would have gone back for Mrs. Doubtfire, especially because somehow Greg has NEVER seen this movie, but we will be leaving that day on our Disney cruise.

I should mention the Enzian has a lot of other programs that bring back older movies, such as their Cult Classics, Book to Big Screen, Science on Screen, Popcorn Flicks in the Park, and Saturday Matinee Classics.  You can see their full upcoming schedule here, but I’ve also included some of my upcoming favorites below:

February 14: Love Actually (Valentine’s Day event with dinner)
March 3: Sense and Sensibility
March 26: Deep Blue Sea (the most ridiculous shark movie everrrr)
April 9: Fight Club (I don’t actually like this movie, but so many people do that I felt I should include it)
June 13: Apollo 13

Flashback Cinema at EPIC Theaters

Every week, EPIC Theaters brings back an older film which they play on Sundays and on Tuesdays.  I treated Greg to tickets to one of his favorites, The Sandlot, near the end of last year.  The times for the Flashback series vary slightly, but seem to be about 1 pm, 4 pm, and 7 pm on the days they are shown.

There are two theater locations depending on what side of Orlando you live on.  For my east side friends, the EPIC Theater at Lee Vista is located near the airport.  They have slightly higher prices with $10.50 for the earlier showings and $12.50 for the evening showing.  My west side friends will save a bit by going to the EPIC Theater at Clermont off Highway 27.  Matinee tickets are $8.50 and evening tickets are $10.50.  Here are the upcoming movies, which are updated every couple months:

February 3 and 6: Oklahoma
February 10 and 13: Casablanca
February 17 and 20: To Kill a Mockingbird
February 24 an 27: Forrest Gump
March 3 and 6: Moulin Rouge

I’m very excited about Moulin Rouge.  Shout out to my high school friends who went to the live action renditions of this movie put on by the Rich Weirdoes.  I’m still a little sad that they only do Rocky Horror now.

TCM Big Screen Classics

Turner Classic Movies is bringing back old classics once a month to Regal, Cinemark, and AMC theaters.  Each movie will be feature exclusive commentary by TCM hosts who will provide insight and background into the movie (I’m guessing this would be be before or after the film an not during it, but I haven’t seen one yet to confirm).  Ticket prices and times vary depending on which day and which theater you go to, but I’ve included the complete list of movies below for the year:

February 3 an 5: The Wizard of Oz
February 17 and 20: My Fair Lady
March 24 and 27: To Kill a Mockingbird
April 14 an 17: Ben-Hur
May 5 and 8: True Grit
May 19, 21, an 22: Steel Magnolias
June 16 and 18: Field of Dreams
July 21 and 24: Glory
August 11 and 14: Hello, Dolly!
September 1 and 4: Lawrence of Arabia
September 22, 24, and 25: The Shawshank Redemption
October 13, 15, and 16: Alien
November 10, 12, and 13: The Godfather Part II
December 1 and 3: When Harry Met Sally

I like that the movies match their nearby holidays, such as Alien being near Halloween, Steel Magnolias near Mother’s Day, and When Harry Met Sally near New Years.  I see what you did there TCM…

Movie Nights at Leu Gardens

I have to admit that seeing movies while sitting on a lawn outdoors is not my favorite because it is either a rare cold Florida night……or I am being eaten alive by mosquitoes.  However, I felt I should include Leu Gardens in this post as they have been hosting their movie nights on the lawn for quite some time.  The lawn opens up at 6:00 for the movie and the showtime varies from 7:30 to 8:30 depending on the night.  Snacks are available for purchase at the movie OR you can bring your own picnic basket (including alcohol).  Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children.  Their upcoming lineup includes:

February 1: Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again
March 1: Mission Impossible Fallout
April 5: Avengers Infinity War

If Greg and I were ever to go to an outdoor movie, it may just be for Infinity War in April.

We hope you enjoy going to movies with your friends and family this year!  There are plenty of old and new movie dates to look forward to 🙂
